With distinct pleasure, and on behalf of the whole Conference Secretariat, I would like to welcome you to the Delhi Public School Model United Nations Conference 2007. Over the last three years, I have come to love this conference with all my heart, and the goal I wish to achieve this year is to open up the fascinating world of being a delegate to as many new students as possible.
A Model UN conference is a simulation of the United Nations and international bodies. Students role-play ambassadors of different countries to debate current issues of global significance. These delegates make speeches, prepare draft resolutions, negotiate with allies and adversaries and resolve conflicts, within the framework of Model UN rules of procedure.
Being a delegate involves in-depth research, excellent communication skills, mutual understanding and respect, and a great deal of diplomacy. It builds awareness on a number of pressing issues, which, in DPSMUN 2007, include landmines, technology and international security, religious intolerance, the US missile defense grid, post-conflict transition and many others. Along with developing a heightened sense of international responsibility, a successful conference helps to increase your confidence exponentially. It awakens that particular sense of fulfillment and satisfaction that comes with a job well done. You get a chance to intellectually challenge yourself, and emerge triumphant. Work, passion and dedication are crucial to make a conference as rewarding an experience as it can be.
“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that frightens us most. We ask ourselves, 'Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, and famous?' Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that people won't feel insecure around you. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in all of us. And when we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”
-Maryanne Williamson, used by Nelson Mandela in his 1994 inaugural speech |

Each delegate participating in this conference is destined to make a difference. It is our responsibility to take action to free the world from the shackles that bind it, to free every human being. For us to be able to do that, we must each live up to our maximum potential, to develop into the best that we can be. The Conference Secretariat is working immeasurably hard to make this conference a success for you, so that you can learn, grow, and make new friends. We will all be available at any time to assist you in any way we can.
I hope this conference will be an unforgettable experience for you, and I wish you all the best.
